NANA: WHAT'S THE STORY? | Events | History | Places | How Smartphones Ruined The Bar Scene

Nana is not just a sleazy area full of dodgy foreign sex pests, freelancers, street markets and touts. That’s the stereotype some have in mind. I've been exploring this area extensively to bring you a unique documentary on a place that is unpredictable, unusual but also being modernised. If you scratch the surface you’ll find interesting stories, history, characters, places, and of course the unexpected.

Pat you have a way of making totally uninteresting things seem interesting. Maybe you should sell real estate. Perhaps you would be too good at your job because after listening to you the owners might not want to sell after hearing from you the attributes and accouterments the property owners didn't realize they have.

Uh, in Atlanta just inside the 285 beltway there was an Ambassador motel/hotel (it was maybe 10-15 stories) built probably in the 60's but when I knew it in the 70's and 80's it was a place to pick up divorcees.

How much is the monthly rent in these slums you show? Free?

I met a hard working smart young lad a few years ago in Bangkok. He paid all his bills by himself from his 6 day a week job earning maybe 13-15k per month, and he had money to send to his mom. I asked how much is your rent? 2000 baht he said.
I said I wanna see a 2000 baht apartment in central Bangkok, can you show me? Well, okay but it's nothing much.
He took me down a soi to an alley way to another alley, and it was a windowless utility room with once florescent light and a gas station-type bath room.
But this guy was happy go lucky because it was his own place which he pays for.

His story gave me encouragement. Maybe no one in my family in 200 years has lived like that but we all have to be ready.

The most dangerous thing as these people have said is the government doesn't enforce the traffic laws. As a driver of a car or motorcycle every time you go out it's like playing a defensive driving video game. If you didn't come close to an accident by the time you arrive you feel relieved.
Pedestrians are considered the lowest form of life and not always shown kindness by drivers.

Regarding crime, just don't get too drunk and you'll be fine, as it is everywhere. There are no pick pockets but if you have someone back to your room you should sleep with one eye open.

Should be playing confederate music with the Atlanta Hotel. "Ashokan Farewell?"

Hi Pat did you ever feature the story of the atlanta in a future video? I stayed there once. Only 3 other rooms where occupied. A pretty cool, unique and quirky place and still a fantastic deal for central BKK 1100BHT per night.

Interesting comment you made about cell phones ruining the nightlife scene. I agree 100%. Every halfwit has their phone out recording, why, I’ll never understand. But it completely turns me off of participating in nightlife fun. Not much of a loss…BKK nightlife today is a punchline to what it once was. The ladies in the bars these days are mostly pretty ugly, and you are nothing more than cash to them. It’s a pretty sad scene these days. I’m happy to have good memories from better days in Thailand. For the prices of things in Bangkok these days, I can live in far better places.

I was stuck in traffic at naba on the way to bumrungrad Hospital in an ambulance vehicle. Proof it’s safe: I was joking with a strange lady looking for customers: it was raining and i asked if she wants new boobs. I said sorry my thai no good. I meant umbrella. I hapa few spares in the back bag of my wheelchair. Even after "insulting" them, i felt safe that i will even move there because of the ambulance situation. I survived and glad I have insurance 😱
