What happens when you turn a retired Boeing 747 into a hotel? I cross the Singapore–Johor border for a day trip to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to find out for myself!
My journey begins at the Johor–Singapore Causeway, where I take a local J11 bus before stopping for a hearty Malaysian-style dim sum breakfast at Gim Cheng Dim Sum Restaurant in Taman Daya.
From there, I head to Toppen Shopping Centre to explore the JB Collector’s Market, where collectors hunt for Hot Wheels, vintage toys, vinyl records, cassette tapes, trading cards, sneakers and all kinds of nostalgic pop-culture treasures.
But that's not the main reason I came to Johor Bahru...
My final destination is 1975 Avenue & Hotel, home to TWO retired Boeing 747 aircraft that have been transformed into hotel suites! ✈️🏨
I have seen Boeing 747 hotels online before, but seeing these massive aircraft in person is a completely different experience. I even try my luck at reception to see if I can get a glimpse inside the plane!
After exploring the Plane Hotel, I make my way back towards Johor Bahru City Square and stop at KOMTAR JBCC for one more Malaysian food adventure at Tea Garden, trying three-layer tea, cocoa bread with butter and kaya, fried noodles with seafood and egg gravy, and herbal chicken.
Join Uncle Go Travelling as I explore another unexpected side of Johor Bahru — from local buses and Malaysian food to collectors' treasures and a hotel built around real Boeing 747s!
