I’m a bus mechanic for NYC transit, we’ve been restoring some of these older MCIs to put back into service, we even have some that are equipped with Caterpillar engines. And I totally remember cutting out and welding new sections of chassis’s and air bag plates because of the rot.

That was a super quick fix! Any bus mechanic who overlooks a simple problem should be demoted. :volcano-green-lava-orange:

102DL3/Series60/B500 = legend. Spent my commutes on DL3s with NYC MTA commuter fleet. Absolutely bulletproof. Do the repairs and sell it. Too good to cut up. Looks pretty solid too.

I have been watching Bus Grease Monkey and enjoy their videos now watching your videos and find myself looking for the next new one Thanks Brandon and Team 😊😊😊

Can you drive a commercial bus with passengers if so take it on a trip with your whole family

What I love the most, is the deep bass of the engine during the low speed maneuvering, throttle inputs. Even the engine idling up to idling down from fast idle, and the torque load going from neutral to drive. I hear it all.

That's funny the painted out letters and it says ours.

We bought our 1st dl3 brand new in 1995.  One of the best buses ever built imo. Series 60/b500. We ordered ours with R22 and the parcel rack auxiliary A/C. If I remember right, MCI offered a shoe/drum conversion for the disc brakes on the tag for$450? And the service rep came out and helped us install it. And we did the over axle  air bag repair at about 750000 miles. We did the motor and trans at the same time. I remember we pulled the motor/trans at our shop, and had the bus towed to ABC bus in faribault Minnesota where they did the air bag support repair. As far as I know that bus is still going down the road.

38:39 - The reason the camera creates this effect is that these LED displays turn segments on in sequence to form the numbers rather than all at once. For the human brain, it works fine, much like a series of very fast-changing static images makes a movie. When you point a camera at them, each frame captures whatever segment(s) are on at the time, and depending on the display and camera timing, they can synchronize or not, and cause these weird effects. You can also notice a similar effect in a video of airplane propellers, which sometimes may appear to stop or even turn back. If the propeller is turning at just the right RPM's so that it is at the same position every time the camera takes a frame, it will appear static. This is also similar to how a timing light uses the strobe effect to make a running engine appear static.

If you are interested in the technical reason for doing it in sequence instead of all at once, which is called multiplexing, it comes down to cost. If you had a microcontroller with an output pin to control each segment, at 7 segments per digit, it takes 28 output pins to drive a 4-digit display. If you instead drive the digits one at a time, you need 7 pins for the data and 4 pins to select a digit (or even 2 if you get creative with pin select combinations), which means you need a microcontroller with 9 to 11 output pins to drive your 4-digit display, which is much cheaper.

Additionally, since you are driving the digits one at a time, you can have much smaller and cheaper power electronics. Since you are only turning on a digit at a time, your worst-case power use is 7 segments lit at once instead of 28 for 4 digits.

I used to rebuild the 05g AC compressor in those buses!! You’re right about the refrigerant application. R22 is way better than the 134a; maybe not environmentally friendly but a better application.

The Equalizers are a little bit like a very primitive Battery Management System.  Way back then, in a previous life we had problems with people not torquing the Equalizers contacts properly. The contacts would overheat and in some cases catch fire.

The no-start problem (21:08) is caused by the tone control being in the incorrect position 🤣🤣

Many different ways to start diesel.  It works flexibility.  The bus works.

The public transit authority I worked for in Denver bought 72 of these MCI 102-DL3's in late 1997 early 1998, minus the restrooms, on special order from the plant in North Dakota. I had a night run on the DEN (DIA in local language) Skyride service  and operated them on my route. I would put on 265 miles per shift on these beasts with the Detroit Series 60's and Allison 6 speed World Atlas transmissions. Most of my driving was on Denver area freeways and Peña Blvd. into the airport where I could almost run it up to the governor. Best bus I ever drove. I retired on them.

This brings me back to my greyhound wrenching days. When I stopped working there in the mid 2000s, the DL3’s had an average of a million miles on them. They ran them until 4 or 5 years ago so I’m guessing they got well over 2 million miles out of them.

It deserves a fix, it didn't run for nothing straight away when you touched it. It knows the master. So fix it and send it of in the wide world! 🙂

This bus looks like the very first motorcoach I drove when I was in training in 2001 to get my class B CDL,  an MCI D 4500, a 1995 model. Miss those work horses. Appreciate this video, got a new subscriber.

Long time RV er 40 ft Cat 350 . YOU BRING UP A LOT OF WHY I AM NOT NOW!

Sitting for 6 years and running like that? Friggin impressive!!! Fix/repair = SELL

always loved the interior of these coaches! my days riding busses were always on these.
