I have an F3T, the F4, FE2. Love the shutter sound of the F4

As a 'Yesterday Man', my photographer career, which involved using all sorts of Nikons from the 1970s and 1980s, ended 23 years ago. I had no need of autofocus – so the F4, despite of its AF weaknesses, would certainly have been a good investment; but in the early 1990s, I contented myself with 'the poor man's F4' > the F801s, which offered some of what the F4 is all about, while being lighter and easier to handle. I still use the F801s today.

I love mine. An exceptional camera. I’ve just purchased the MF23 data back for mine. It really is a terminator now and in new condition.

I still have mine, brings back memories. Great camera body 📷🔝

And it has adjustable diopter in the viewfinder.
Which only started to appear back then.

The Nikon F4 is the Ferrari 360 of cameras. The 360 was also a bridge, between the old era of gated shifters and pop-up headlights and the new era of paddle shifters and rounded aerodynamic bodies. To this day the 360 is massively under-appreciated, just like the Nikon F4, yet both look better than anything that came before or after them.

I was from the beginning a Nikon man, having started with a Nikkormat in my student years. Years later, in 1996, being an owner of a Nikon FM2 I realized that manual focusing is very slow and made me miss good shots at game reserves I visited with my children. As such, I bought a Pentax MZ-5 which I still have. The MX-5 is a superb camera, I got great shots with it, in game reserves, portraits at home and more. It is very light and it has all the bells and whistles the F4 has plus built in flash. It is not professional grade, rather for advanced enthusiasts. One thing that it doesn’t have is the removable viewfinder for waist level photos that the F2, F3 and F4 had. Today I use exclusively Nikon DSLRs.

The best Manual Focus camera Nikon made (plus it can do AF in that early AF kind of way).  FYI, your serial number is probably 1989, maybe 1990.
You can use all those G lenses, but only in P or S modes.  But then AF is super fast.

Great video. I have a pair of F4, an F4S and an F4E. My favorite camera of all time.

I’m not a photographer yet this appeared in my feed.  I just had to say that this channel’s name is so clever!  Bravo

I consider the F4 to look like it came out of the movie "the terminator "  so I dub it " the terminator"

Great video Matt. Like yourself I loved the F4 when it was released but no way could I afford one.I even went to a camera shop in Manchester knowing they had one in stock and the kind shop assistant let me use the camera whilst explaining all the specs etc. Fast forward 20 years and I bought one off EBay for about £200. There is just something about using the F4 that feels simple yet special. It is a pro camera but is so easy to use and gives fantastic results

This camera is a sleeper   (or has been until now!). I bought two within a short time because the prices were good, and after getting the first one, I knew I never wanted to be without one. BTW, the full databack (larger LCD screen, can do a number of things, even tripping the shutter when something comes in focus, something I have been meaning to try on the birds at my bird feeder. Cheers!

I've got the same setup w the Nikkor 50mm F1.4 D lens and it's my best camera to date. It works when I want it to, I don't have to take care of it to much. It's a tank and a trustworthy film photographers tool.

Don't know why you'd ever need the bigger battery grip on this, I'm on the standard 4 AA cartridge and I haven't changed them in months. I've used it on two major jobs and a holiday in that time, probably 30+ rolls all in, I'm super impressed with it.

At the time, I had a Dynax 700i, later a 600, and an 800, which I still have. The 700 stopped working, and the grip came apart. Well, they are not Nikons. The F70 my friend used at the time did not have as much technology. However, I did dream of using the F4 and the F90, which were way out of our price range.  Now I love my Nikons. I do love the FA, F6, d700. Missing from my collection are the F4 and the d850, and a few more.

This camera has me drooling, but for anyone who can't quite stretch to an F4, or who can't or doesn't want to manage the wight, I recommend it's little brother, the F-801/F-801s. I just picked up a near mint example for £30, absolutely unbeatable value right now!

Excellent video. This camera was a major leap forward for Nikon. The weight of the F4 should be compared to a F3 plus the MD-4, then it‘s surprisingly light 😉
I love mine, got it for about 200€, use it on a regular basis (but I have too many choices of other 35mm cameras).

Hey Matt, thanks again for another camera video! I’ve just picked up a F2 and F100 in an auction. I’ve really been enjoying using both! Decision paralysis starts now for Rustival. With 150  film cameras to choose from, it’s difficult! (Also PS if there’s anything you’d like to borrow for a review, let me know 😄)

I havent forgotten it. In fact I feed it €50 of film every week just to make sure it maintains its 1.4kg weight...❤
