What if your retirement could look completely different from what you imagined?
At 69, Mark had already built the kind of retirement many Americans dream about. He had spent his career as a financial controller in Florida, had traveled extensively, and had planned to retire on his own timeline.
Then something changed.
Instead of waiting another two years, Mark and his wife decided to move their retirement forward by a year — and leave the United States for Rio Grande, Brazil, a city of roughly 200,000 people that most Americans have probably never heard of.
And what makes Mark's story especially unusual is that he isn't living in one of Brazil's famous expat destinations.
In fact, after more than a year living there, he says he hasn't met a single American living in his area.
So what is retirement actually like when you're living in a relatively unknown Brazilian city, surrounded almost entirely by locals?
In this video, Mark takes us inside his new life.
We talk about why he and his wife chose Brazil, the connection his wife has to the region and her enormous extended family, and what it was like to sell almost everything they owned and make the move.
He also explains how he obtained Brazilian residency, what happened when he tried to get his visa online, and even the unusual story of arriving in Brazil after midnight with their cat.
Then we get into the part that really makes his story interesting:
What does everyday retirement look like once you're actually there?
Mark shows us the house they're renting, his morning routine, exercising, walking the dog, spending time with family, eating churrasco, going to the beach, sailing and enjoying the freedom that retirement has given him.
And financially, the difference is significant.
Mark estimates that the lifestyle they have in Rio Grande costs roughly $4,000 a month, compared with around $8,000 for a comparable lifestyle in Florida. Their five-bedroom, four-bath rental with a pool would cost dramatically more in the United States.
But this isn't simply a story about finding somewhere cheaper.
Because Brazil comes with trade-offs.
Mark talks openly about the things that took some getting used to — concrete houses, colder interiors, kitchens without many of the appliances Americans take for granted, and Brazilian driving.
We also explore what it's like to be one of the very few Americans in town. Mark even tells the story of discovering that two Americans were living only a couple of blocks away — and why he wasn't particularly interested in seeking them out.
Because ultimately, the question isn't:
“Is Brazil cheaper than America?”
It's:
“Did Mark actually build a better retirement?”
And his answer may be the most revealing part of the entire conversation.
After returning to the United States for a visit, Mark says he actually found himself missing Brazil.
For a man who has spent his life traveling, working and planning carefully for the future, he now describes these as the best sixteen months of his life.
