In this new episode of "Special Vehicles," Matteo Valenti takes us on a journey to discover how a pickup can be transformed into an exploration vehicle ready for a round-the-world tour. The protagonist is the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster, a one-of-a-kind pickup truck paired with a fully removable living area designed by Hotomobil and distributed in Italy by Cellula Pickup.
This solution combines the utility of a work vehicle with the convenience of a camper: the living area can be easily mounted or removed, even without a forklift, and can be installed on any European pickup (Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator, Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi L200, VW Amarok, Mercedes X-Class). Equipped with additional batteries, a solar panel, an inverter, and a home automation system, the living area guarantees energy autonomy, essential comfort, and the ability to stand inside, as well as cooking and showering with hot water, as well as using a portable toilet, all in a compact and durable environment.
The Quartermaster pickup, derived from the Grenadier, is designed for the most extreme off-roading: a sturdy frame with 3.5 mm steel rails, rigid axles supplied by the Italian Carraro Group, permanent all-wheel drive with locking differentials, low range gears, recirculating ball steering, and a 3.0-liter BMW engine (diesel or gasoline) paired with an 8-speed ZF transmission. Minimizing electronics and adopting simple yet robust solutions make the vehicle reliable even in extreme conditions. The sides are equipped with accessory racks and sockets, steel wheels with BF Goodrich tires, optional winches, and an easily accessible electrical system for maintenance and customization.
This combination makes it possible to tackle challenging terrain, live independently in remote locations, and enjoy essential comforts without sacrificing exploration capabilities. The price of the cell starts at around €25,000 (base version, without options), while the Grenadier Quartermaster ranges from €80,000 to €92,000 in the most off-road-prepared version.
Thanks to the Crevola Alta Consortium for their valuable collaboration.
