Thank you for good, concise information! I particularly love that you explain “Why?” That is so very important and you never fail to explain. Thanks!

Chris, thanks heaps for your detailed and at the same time clear explanation and demonstration of oiling out. Things like leaving the canvas vertical to better judge how much oil you are using, using makeup sponges to apply and remove excess oil, the actual visuals, that is being able to see the real-time actions of wiping you use — care, pace, implied pressure, timing and rhythm — all contributed to a valuable how to lesson. I’ll be back for more. SH

Thank you for this video. David Kassan brought me here. I once oiled out an entire painting with a thin, thin coat of straight refined linseed oil. The painting had a beautiful blue abstract background. It severely yellowed within two weeks of the application. I was able to save the painting, but it was a valuable lesson. Never never never oil out an entire panting, and artist grade linseed oil definitely goes yellow.

Walnut oil is good, but as you said, a lighter oil- lighter in terms of "fat" too, meaning your top layer may refract from the layer below as it is applied and cures. You can get some beading upon application over well cured layers.

Have been oiling out with gamsol and Galkyd and wiping it completely off like Gamblin instructs for decades. I don’t leave anything on the canvas either.

How do you fix if it drips but not enough wet to wipe off?

A very simple product for oiling out is Oleogel by Rublev Natural Pigments. An almost clear gel of linseed oil and fumed silica, in a tube or can no mixing with smelly turps. Great as a medium too.
Acrylic gesso is also a major cause of sinking in, reacts like a sponge with oil paint, more so with certain colors.

I always thought that i must oil out the areas that i wanted to glaze or put new layers on in general. To be able to create subtle gradients and soft edges. I am confused how to achieve such things on a dry surface... Is it wrong to oil out to be able to glaze and layer?

It really would have helped me to see more hands on demonstration and show us a few more examples of sunken paint and then an oiled out one as comparison. I watched a while and kept waiting to see what youre talking about, but you just kept talking. I like the cat!

Thanks for the helpful tutorial. Is it ok to do this multiple times? I have some paintings that require several sessions and everytime I return to them, the darker colors are sunken in. Can I oil out every time? Say 10-20 times in one painting?

There's as many variations on the mixture and what it's made of as there are videos about oiling out. Bottom line: it doesn't seem to matter what the mixture is.
