👉 Forty-eight hours after the mudslide that struck the pre-Andean commune of Las Condes, in Santiago, Chile, efforts are focused on rescue and damage assessment. According to the municipal tally, 2,015 homes were affected—55 with major damage and rendered uninhabitable, and 1,960 with minor damage—in an affected area spanning more than three kilometers.

The phenomenon was caused by intense rainfall at high altitude, with a freezing level at 2,800 meters that prevented snow accumulation and generated a rapid descent of water mixed with mud and debris. “Everything that shouldn't have happened, did,” summarized Cristian Pino Lanata from the scene. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The emergency has brought municipal and national plans for dealing with this type of natural disaster under scrutiny. Questions are being raised about whether adequate early warning systems existed and whether budget cuts to the national emergency management office influenced the official response. Mayor Catalina San Martín requested weather radars to anticipate similar events.

In addition to the material damage, the outpouring of community solidarity was highlighted: university volunteers, residents, and the armed forces are actively collaborating in the post-flood relief efforts. Although international flights are operating normally and tourist destinations remain accessible, authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary visits to the affected areas.
