--Maiko Matsumura, a picture book author, creates works that resonate with the heart through her hand-drawn, delicate watercolors and stories that are warm yet serene. She decided to become a picture book author in junior high school, and took her first step towards becoming a picture book author when she was selected for the "Bologna Children's Book Fair" in Italy during her fourth year of art college.
"I want to create picture books that will help people remember, even as adults, the feeling of 'seeing something simply beautiful' as a child."
Currently, her workspace is a corner of the living room in her home, where she lives with her partner, photographer Takashi Matsumura, and their two children. In this comfortable space where life and work intersect, we spoke with Matsumura about the origins of her fascination with picture books, the thoughts she puts into her creations, and the happiness she feels now.
