✠ A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. 22:1-14

Then Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables.

1 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son.

3 He sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast.

But they would not come.

4 So he sent other servants and said to them,

‘Tell those who are invited, “I have prepared the feast. The bulls and fattened animals have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come, come to the wedding feast.”’

5 But they paid no heed.

Some went to the fields, and others went to their trade.

6 And the rest seized the servants, beat them, and killed them.

7 The king was furious.

So he sent his army to destroy those murderers and burned their town.

8 Then he said to his servants,

‘The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.

9 So go to the entrances of the towns and invite everyone you find to the feast.’

10 So the servants went into the streets He went out and brought in everyone he found, both good and bad.

The banquet hall was filled with guests.

11 When the King came in to look around at the guests,

he saw one man who was not wearing a wedding garment,

12 and asked him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?”

He could not say a word.

13 Then the King said to his servants,

“Bind his hands and feet and throw him out into the outer darkness.

There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

The Word of the Lord.
