Me and my wife made the decision to get out of debt at the beginning of 2025. January 12th 2026 we are debt free.

Dave's plan worked for my husband and I. After we paid off the debt, saved up for a small house and paid it off (2.5 years total), he died unexpectedly at age 49. We were only married for 3 years. In my grief, I am so appreciative I have no debt and a paid off house.

I loved how he explained the baby step one. So many people don’t get what he is trying to convey. Like he said. It’s an attainable goal. It’s lights the fire and gives you confidence in the process

Dave said along time ago, if you were worried about the math, you wouldn’t of gotten here anyway. It’s psychological, not mathematical

I started Dave’s plan in 2024…baby steps. First I cut cut cut my expenses. Then I paid off credit cards….lowest to highest. Then put it all toward car payment. Now everything is paid off and last year I was able to put 20K in my savings. It works…stick with it!

1k emergency fund means I can feed myself, put gas in my car and get myself back and forth to work....that's extreme stress release in my day to day life

Husband and I found Dave Ramsey in 2016. Fast forward to 2026 and we have no debt, including a fully paid off house at 39 and 36 years old.

I was like. Yeah 1000 in 1975 was a lot. Then I realized 30 years ago was 1995. For fuck sake

Used the debt snowball and it made a huge difference. Seeing those balances go to 0 made me more excited to pay off more. I cut back on groceries, and other things to knock out the next one balance. Was a rough 4 months but I got it done

Dave is good for finance in the same way that AA is good for alcoholics. Respect for what he does and there’s a lot of good stuff there. Just not perfect for everyone

It is nice that these guys have different perspectives, have a spirited and respectful conversation, and leaves it open to the viewer to decide which path to take.

He's absolutely right on the $1,000. Ramsey's plan is about breaking bad habits and creating good ones.

George Kemel is insanely good at selling the baby steps and breaking things down a 4th grader could understand. I wish we had this education in school as a prerequisite to even graduate high school.

The 1k starter isnt a cover all. Its a basic start to saving. Saving 1k is harder than you think, its a baby step of saving and using your money wisely, it isnt meant to cover everything. Its a principle. Ppl take things to literally. Learn the mechanics and you can start saving bigger.

The $1,000 emergency fund debate is funny because yeah inflation exists, but I also get the “quick win” psychology thing. The bigger takeaway for me is how much this is behavior, not math. I’ve thought about Freedom Debt Relief before, but the whole “focus intensity” approach makes sense if you actually follow through.

@Vols_fan10 8 months ago

I’m 36, my wife and I have been married for 10 years with 2 boys. No debt and around 100k in different areas of investment. Over 6 months of emergency fund. Thank you Dave! It works!

@tomsigitura7824 6 months ago

The whole “$1,000 emergency fund first” debate always gets people fired up. I get the behavior angle, even if the math crowd hates it. When you’re already stressed about payments the psychology matters more than perfect optimization. I’ve been trying to simplify things myself while Americor is somewhere in the mix.

Getting out of debt is mostly mental and behavioral. Doesn’t matter what method you use as long you actually execute

@matthewc2203 4 months ago

The point is most people would see 5k emergency fund say I can't save that and quit before they start. People hear 1k and are like I could do that and just getting started is the hardest part!
