On May 18th, 1980, after two months of earthquakes and warnings, the entire north face of Mount St. Helens broke loose and slid away. But it wasn't the ash climbing into the sky that killed 57 people that morning. It was what the mountain threw sideways – a wall of rock and gas at 660 degrees, racing north near the speed of sound, that burst from the volcano's torn-open flank, flattened 230 square miles of forest in minutes, and reached a ridge six miles out that the science of 1980 had called safe. What followed became the deadliest volcanic eruption in modern American history.
