BERLIN: Sparks fly in the Bundestag! The complete duel between Chancellor Merz and Alice Weidel!

This is the first verbal clash between Merz and Weidel since the AfD's landslide victory in Saxony-Anhalt. Things get heated. The President of the Bundestag has to intervene twice.

Three days after the AfD's landslide victory in Saxony-Anhalt, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) launched a scathing attack on the party in the Bundestag. During the general debate on the budget, he accused the party of, among other things, "contempt for our democratic institutions" and a "constant denigration of the representatives of our state." "They want to destabilize our country," said the CDU leader.

Earlier, AfD leader Alice Weidel, the opening speaker, declared that, in her view, the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition was finished. "The voters in Saxony-Anhalt have made it perfectly clear to you, in the language of the democratic sovereign: CDU/CSU-SPD is over," said the opposition leader.

Klöckner Threatens AfD MPs with Expulsion

Merz's speech was interrupted by heckling from the AfD throughout his speech. Bundestag President Julia Klöckner twice reprimanded the parliamentarians of the party, which is classified as right-wing extremist by the domestic intelligence agency in several German states. "We're not on a football pitch here," the CDU politician said – and threatened to expel the MPs from the plenary hall. "If this kind of behavior happens again, I'll throw you out."

It was the first meeting between Merz and Weidel since the AfD's landslide victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. The AfD more than doubled its 2021 result, becoming the strongest party with 43.8 percent of the vote. With the help of the BSW (Citizens' Initiative for Saxony-Anhalt), it could now form a government – but it is not yet clear whether the BSW would be willing to cooperate. The CDU, on the other hand, plummeted by almost 20 percentage points to 17.2 percent.
... Merz to Weidel: You're "bursting with energy"

The Chancellor is being held partly responsible within the CDU for the election debacle in Saxony-Anhalt. He had already admitted mistakes and shortcomings on Monday and promised to better explain the federal government's policies. He said it was necessary to reach "people in all their emotional depth."

The general debate was the first opportunity to make good on his promise. In his speech, however, he initially focused on attacking the strongest opposition party – as if he himself were the opposition leader. "Yes, Ms. Weidel, you're bursting with energy today," he began. For minutes, he dissected the AfD leader's opening speech, attacking her stance on Russia and her energy policy.

Merz calls "remigration" "ethnic cleansing"

The sharpest attack, however, came on the topic of migration. Referring to the AfD's use of the term "remigration," Merz accused them of wanting to carry out "ethnic cleansing" based on origin and skin color. Merz interpreted the AfD's failure to achieve an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt as a failure. The party had thus missed its election goal of being able to govern alone. He also accused the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt of "election fraud" because it is now looking for ways to join the government with the help of others – even though it had previously ruled this out. Regarding the upcoming elections, Merz predicted for the AfD: "You won't get a majority anywhere in Germany with this kind of policy."

As for his own consequences from the election, Merz reiterated what he had already said in recent days. He reaffirmed his intention to stick to his reform course, even if it meant "examining the details." Merz also repeated that there needed to be a new narrative, especially for younger generations, explaining the purpose of the reforms. He had already coined the phrase "Prosperity for all generations" for this purpose. However, the Chancellor did not yet reveal what this might mean in concrete terms.
