Welcome to Future Forge! In the fall of 2015, a fourth-generation cattle rancher and a crew of scientists waded into a dead, dried-out creek in Idaho, pounded rows of wooden posts into the mud, wove them through with willow, and released nine wild beavers into the wreckage. No concrete. No machinery. No reservoir. Just sticks, mud, and a handful of 40-pound rodents set loose along almost two miles of streambed that had run bone-dry every summer for 20 years.

It looked almost too primitive to solve a problem that had defeated the creek for decades. But the idea was simple: give the beavers a starting point, then let their own engineering reshape the waterway.
