So today I'm going to show you what the registry is, how to back it up in case you mess something up, and how to modify it to customize the way that Windows works.

You can export registry Hives, Keys etc. Do this for whatever you are going to change. You can edit exported file and reimport as well, (edit a copy) - you can use notepad - registry is actually just a formatted text file. If stuffed up just import original. Turn off Bitlocker while doing this - if you manage to crash the system you can boot to recovery - where you can load edit and fix the registry exported file helps with this. Reg file can be used to apply config to multiple computers.

Very interesting video. I have been messing with regedit a long time, and use the fingers crossed method. Next time I will export the keys before I do anything. There is also a lot of duplication in the registry keys.

Totally agree I’ve been in tech support for 25 plus years. In those 25 years I’ve only screwed up once editing the registry. Like you said my restore point saved me. In fact users need to get familiar with restore points. I use them all the time.

One thing he didn’t mention is that to jump down the registry quickly like he did instead of scrolling through them all you need to just type the first letter of the key you want. For the first one for example you just press D on the keyboard to jump to the Ds

Yes, the registry is powerful. Some of these things are not too intimidating once introduced - like this video. Alas, several times, I have also seen registry issues mimic strange and intermittent hardware failures. Those were interesting to diagnose and correct.

Good Video! Thank you. I generally don't mess with the registry because I don't know how to navigate around and what I safely can and can't do. If I do anything at all then I follow guides and use those guides if I need to back track. Your guide really helps make a custom windows environment and shows how to use that on other systems. 👍👍

Checkbox in Windows is default on when laptops have touch screen. We disable this in registry because we want the users to have same no matter what if the pc has touch screen or not.
