This analysis is remarkable.  What an incredible scene in one take.  Spielberg truly is a genius.

The one thing you missed is that at the 14/15 screen (11:41) the mayor is completely covering up the shark fin on the sign, which is essentially what he wants to do, to pretend it was never there.

One other VERY important item to note in my humble opinion.  Any director willing to attempt this type of one long shot is someone who has absolute 100% confidence in their actors.  Spielberg knew how good of a cast he had.  I've always loved this scene as well. Good video.

Good eye for that Wellesian low-angle composition. Clever, too, how Spielberg uses a tilt-up to the billboard as an excuse to motivate his low angle.

Love the story about Dreyfuss' continual flub of the Latin name for the shark, Carcharodon carcharias, so it was written on a cue card and held out of frame over Scheider's left shoulder. You can see Dreyfuss sneak a peek at it just before delivering that line at 3:09.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the entire movie. Masterclass.

Excellent break down of a scene that everyday viewers take for granted and would never appreciate for its complexity. But the great ones always make it look easy. Thank you for this. Gladly subscribing for more!

Spielberg to actors and crew (1975): “Do whatever but just get it in one shot and keep everybody in frame. We don’t have time to any more editing!”

Something about Richard Dreyfus saying “bites you on the ass” just makes me laugh

The mayors specific colour of jacket represents JAWS.  Brody and Hooper are dressed in black which represents the dorsal fin on the billboard.  Spielberg shot this scene as though two smaller sharks were attacking the big shark.  He was creating tension and foreshadowing the inevitable shark hunt.  The billboard represents Quint's fishing boat.

Interesting side note: Murray Hamilton supplied that suit himself. It was his own and when Spielberg saw it he loved it

The anchors on the mayor's suit. He's not being moved.

Jaws is so much more than just a "horror" film. It defies genres!

Jaws is perfect

Great breakdown. The schedule issues on 'Jaws' notwithstanding, I think Spielberg's ability to make one shot do the work of 20 shots is part of what enables him to shoot films so quickly.

Great analysis of a brilliant scene. So much I didn’t realise but subliminally appreciated.
Thanks for all the detail.

Perfection from a master. One of the best examples available. Nice work. The actors are also on top of their game. They had to do a complete take without screw ups. Most really good actors love this stuff. Like stage acting in front of the camera. The camera crew the Director the acting. Here’s a lesson for Filmmaker, if you don’t want your story to be completely retold in the edit room when you have no control of do it in the “Oner”

The documentary of the remastering of the film was great. Especially the color correction process without ruining the original look of the film.

Michael Chapman was the camera operator. Think about this ..steadicam was was 10 years in the future and every shot on the water was handheld..by Michael Chapman. Talk about steady shot. Spielberg always glowingly praised his rock steady hands. Michael Chapman was also the camera operator on The Godfather 1 and 2. Chapman himself became a Cinematographer. Taxi Driver! And Raging Bull!! Michael Chapman was home schooled by his intellectual parents. And he was also my Boss on my first movie Rising Sun
I miss you so   REST IN PEACE SIR

This is also my favourite scene from the film❤ I also noticed it was done as one continuous take - risky but breathtakingly brilliant ❤👏
