Want to easily forget unpleasant memories and forever remember happy ones? Is it possible to organize memories as you wish? A future where you can freely control your brain is just around the corner!? Latest brain research! It was previously believed that brain memory was controlled by neurons, the most common type of nerve cell. However, Professor Atsushi Nagai of RIKEN focused on glial cells, particularly astrocytes, which were previously thought to be useless. He discovered that astrocytes actually play a role in retaining and recalling specific memories! By elucidating the process of memory consolidation, the possibilities surrounding memory, such as retaining preferred memories, have expanded dramatically! While neurons react instantaneously and quickly forget, astrocytes react very slowly, and it's thought that they "consolidate" memories by carefully capturing them. If we can effectively manipulate astrocytes, it may be possible to select memories, promote memorization during learning, or even solidify good performance in athletes! What kind of future will this cutting-edge brain memory research create?
