Three-phase brushless motors are everywhere — from EV traction systems and 3 phase fuel pumps to EGR valves and valvetronic setups.

In this video we are going to explore how to test a three phase fule pump motor. You’ll learn how to identify them, understand how they work, and perform quick, accurate resistance checks using tools like a multimeter, milliohmeter, and the dedicated PicoScope MT03A Milliohm and Motor Tester kit.

As an old ASE recertified Master (expired in 1992) and a degreed aerospace engineer for the past 30 years, it's good to see automotive catching up with aviation diagnostics. We developed the use of milliohm readings to sniff out compromised wire runs (unseated pins, over-crimped contacts, etc.) This is easier in aviation due to many systems running a pair of wires for redundancy. Data wires are largely in pairs, so they're easy to compare. A difference of >2.5/3% between a representative pair indicates a problem. In a pinch, one could use a FLUKE 289 on Lo-Ohm mode (50-ohm max) as a poor man's milliohm meter, and the REL% function will do the difference math for you. It's not a Kelvin meter, so your lead resistance will be a factor and not my first choice. Milliohm measurements are critical for troubleshooting conditions that present intermittent faults. I'm currently partial to the Hiokoi RDM3548, which is thermally compensated (it appears the PICO is too). Good stuff, as always, Darren.

I literally just came across one of these for the first time 2 days ago. Lol

Hi nice example of measuring a three phase motor. But you should not touch both measuring leads with with your hands when measuring. You will also measure the resistance from your body. And I know your body's resistance is mutch greater then what you are measuring. But stil it influences your measurment. And someone that trying to learn from you may make it a wrong habbit. No affence just something I noticed.

You could also measure conductance by connecting it to a power supply and measuring current with more conventional instruments. It's basically the reciprocal of resistance.

It’s so hard to keep up with the vehicles from points and condensers to the ones now thanks for the education of them

verry cool video. Subscribed +1. What happens when other factors like the motors are hot. Sometimes heat will make the motors "act up". Are there any methods to monitor under load? I think Eric O from South Main auto got stumped on a fuel pump module for GM truck. "I took a big fat guess" He was indicating he would need to learn the low down on 3 phase motors and theory and operation.
