Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca starred in one of the most extraordinary survival stories of Spanish exploration in the Americas. After joining Pánfilo de Narváez's expedition in 1527, the conquest of Florida ended in famine, shipwrecks, and the disappearance of almost the entire expedition. Eight years later, only Cabeza de Vaca, Andrés Dorantes, Alonso del Castillo, and Estebanico managed to reach Spanish territory again. In this documentary, we reconstruct Narváez's expedition, the shipwreck on Mal Hado Island, Cabeza de Vaca's years as a survivor, healer, and trader among indigenous peoples, his arrival in New Spain, and his surprising second life as adelantado of the Río de la Plata.

Cabeza de Vaca left Spain as treasurer of a conquest enterprise and ended up traversing territories that Europeans could barely locate on their maps. He lost the ships, the weapons, the clothing, and any ability to assert authority. To stay alive, he had to learn languages, discover new trade networks, and depend on the communities he encountered along the way.

His story is also that of Andrés Dorantes, Alonso del Castillo, and Estebanico, the four men who managed to survive Narváez's disaster. And it doesn't end when they reach Mexico: years later, Cabeza de Vaca would return to the Americas as governor of the Río de la Plata, regaining the authority he had lost in Florida… only to end up at odds with the Spanish themselves and return to the Iberian Peninsula as a prisoner.

An odyssey of shipwrecks, hunger, exploration, survival, culture clash, and power in 16th-century America.
