This sequence (more accurately, the sequence leading up to it, where we’re dealing with Red’s “longest night”) is the most anxious I’ve ever been watching a movie.

One of my favorite things about this movie, was in finding out that that it's Red's story all along, the 'Redemption' bit is Red's. Andy was just a guy in the midst of things.

My favorite movie of all time. A story of hope and the triumph that it brings.

I used to work downriver from Folsom Prison. One day we were all sitting in the break room when we saw a bunch of police & sheriff running around outside heavily armed. We were told to shelter in place and if we needed to go to our car we’d need an escort. Turned out a prisoner had escaped sorta like Andy. He had gone down a storm drain  that emptied into the American River. He had a raft to float down the river. He was never caught and remains the longest person listed on the FBI 10 Most Wanted list.

Many people consider this as the greatest prison movie ever and I'm definitely one of them.

Andy f**** Dufresne!
This is actually how you write his name, I  actually had to look it up & imagine my surprise.

Keep running, Andy. That river is NO PLACE to stand during a thunderstorm!

This compilation doesn't show it, but Andy does indeed rob the Warden of ALL of his cooked money. 340,000 dollars if I recall correctly.

The best place to hide something is in plain site.

Tell your AI artist to watch the movie to tell the difference between Rita Hayworth and Raquel Welch.

HOW CAN PEOPLE WATCH MOVIES WITH ONLY ONE EARPIECE??? THE SOUND IS HALF OF THE MOVIE!!!

Red  “They found Andy some 30 minutes later with $1 worth of chicken wire separating him and freedom.   What the Warden let Captain Hadley & the guards do to him that day still gives me nightmares…”

An excellent classic movie, but with a lot of flaws. For instance, 500 yards = 1,500 feet. Not anywhere "just shy of half of a mile" by any stretch. Half of a mile is 2,640 feet or 880 yards, almost twice what Andy is purported to have crawled. The pipe that he broke open with the rock looks pressurized, but is supposed to have been a rusted, gravity-fed waste pipe rather than a high-pressure main line, and the heavy rainstorm flushed the system while venting the pipe. Old prison sewer lines relied on a downward slope and the natural flow of wastewater rather than continuous mechanical pressure. When Andy cracked the brittle, aging pipe, the built-up internal gases and the sudden rush of storm-diluted sewage sprayed out temporarily, creating a burst of contents that felt pressurized to a desperate prisoner. Breaking the pipe opened it to the prison wall cavity and allowed the accumulated sewer gases to vent, while the heavy rain provided a large volume of water to wash the pipe through to the open drainage creek. In reality, a sealed underground pipe stretching 500 yards filled with decomposing waste would lack sufficient oxygen and contain lethal levels of hydrogen sulfide or methane, making a live unassisted crawl nearly impossible.
