Great movie. Great video. This channel deserves FAR MORE subs than it has.

A big Hollywood budget would have ruined this masterpiece

The score by Bernard Herrmann is amazing

It's difficult to explain the impact that this film had when it was first released. I was 24 when I first saw it, not long out of the military, and the powerful sense of being alone and adrift was hard to communicate to others. You think that you've seen through all the hypocrisy that life has to offer and then discover that there are any number of layers that you haven't even scratched the surface of yet. Stupidly you think that violence might be a shortcut to getting answers. Another dead end. This movie knew that and articulated it like nothing else I'd ever seen before or since.

I saw this movie in 1977 in a theater when I was 10.
My “not all there” aunt for some reason thought it was a cowboy movie. Imagine the impression this would have on a 10 year old boy.

The music is a major part of the movie, and it explains here that the composer died right after he finished, something I had not heard before. The melody, then the disturbing beat, beat, beat, beat.

if DeNiro had never made another movie,   his performance in Taxi Driver is eternal.  the movie itself is one of the greatest.  the themes of the movie were both topical and more universal.   NYC was really like that in it's seemier aspects.  like most great works of art,  everything came together on chemistry and timing beyond anyone's imagination.    again,   as great a career as Scorsese had -  his greatest movie is really Taxi Driver.

I could listen to this all day,its fascinating how they put these epic/iconic movies together on low budgets aswell, truly a masterpiece.

I always felt like the ending of this film was him imagining himself as the hero as he lie there dying.

Paul Schrader is deep, Marty with those actors did some work of art and the preteen Jody Foster was delightful.

"It jumped out of me like an animal." What a writer.

I've got to point out something because it's unfair. When Paul spoke about the shooting at Gerald Ford there was a picture of Patty Hearst. Patty wasn't the shooter. The shooter's name was Lynnette Fromme, also known as Squeaky Fromme, and she was a Manson family member. Patty Hearst had nothing to do with that.

I’m fascinated by the fact that Jodi Foster was 12 years old playing a drug addicted prostitute! She was acting opposite guys like Harvey Keitel who is involved in very intimate scenes with her…yet no one flipped out about it. She and her mother decided that the role was something she wanted to tackle as an actress. So she did. She didn’t feel traumatized by the subject matter bc she was ACTING. No one flying a victim flag. No one over reacting to the intensity. She was part of an artistic process and she was happy to be there. I laughed imagining Harvey Keitel “respectfully” listening to Jodie Foster’s mother as she tried to educate him on the ways of Hollywood!

🤣

This was great. Absolutely fascinating to watch!

Paul Schrader remains one of the cleverest people and shrewdest cultural commentators ever born👍

This video reminded me how intense Taxi Driver was when it was released in theaters. The 1970s was the best decade for film.

Dick Smith legendary special effects artist.

This documentary was well worth watching.  I wish they talked more about the cinematography of the film.  I think I saw another show in which Marty elaborated about it.  The opening scenes with the green and red lights sometimes in focus and sometimes blurred was visually appealing.  There were many other visual touches as well which created a dreamscape aspect that was mesmerizing.

When Scorsese says, I’m going to make Taxi Driver. When someone creates art, they hope for a great idea.

This and many other 1970's films gave the impression of Manhattan as always dark, rainy, and crime-ridden.  That image inspired the street scenes in "Blade Runner".  Many disaffected young men related to the Travis Bickel character, most notably John Hinckley who tried to assassinate President Reagan.  Robert DeNiro was perfect for the role.  The scene that related how his attitude had gone totally anti-social is when he tipped over the TV in his apartment.  The Mohawk haircut only helped emphasize that.  Rewriting the pimp character as a perhaps Native American with long hair was genius and added to interest or Manhattan as an other-world.
