Why Every Koi Purist Has a Butterfly Koi Problem

Butterfly koi are the most popular pond fish in America, and they're banned from traditional koi shows. Here's the strange history of why.

From Japanese rice paddies to a North Carolina hatchery, the butterfly koi fish took a wild road to becoming the default backyard pond fish. We get into real koi history, the $1.8 million koi that sold at auction, why those long fins disqualify an otherwise gorgeous fish, and the double standard that welcomes scaleless German food carp while keeping the long fins out.

Long-fin koi look great, but the extra fin weight makes them less aerodynamic. This is still fine for long-bodied types. But pairing a short-body with long fins? That's a deadly combo. It cuts their life short compared to traditional Japanese koi that can live for centuries. It’s all about choices: a beautifully patterned long-body, a long-fin, or the lethal short-body variant. A short body squishes their internal organs, which drastically reduces their lifespan.

Second long-finned koi video lately. I suspect someone invested in some, and they want legitimacy. “Don’t listen to them Koi-Boi. I think you’re the most beautiful by far.”

I understand if you don't like a butterfly KOI because you don't like if for it's form or something to that effect... But if you don't like it because it's not pure, that's utterly BS because almost all of the fishes we keep in in the hobby are modified throughout the centuries in one form or the other.

The emperor of Japan has butterfly Kois in his pond in the imperial palace in Tokyo (I have been there and seem them). That settles the argument for me.

I'm planning to make a backyard koi pond in the far future, and I for one am a fan of these long-finned varieties of koi. I actually hardly ever saw them in real life even in my state of Texas in my entire 37 years of life, so I'm surprised to learn that they actually are so popular here in the U.S. As for why the prestigious koi shows in Japan hate them, I think they're just jealous that a breeder that happened to be in America out-shined their "traditional" breeds with an even more beautiful long-finned variety, that is also HARDIER and CHEAPER. I bet you anything under the sun that if this exact same long-finned butterfly koi had originated in Japan instead of America, the Japanese koi shows would have had absolutely NO issue with it. Tldr; The Japanese koi judges just hate America.

So just for that, I'm gonna stock my future koi pond with exclusively butterfly koi, just to rub it in these purist's faces. >:D

Whether you like your Jeep or Suzuki Cappucino, they are both cars.

I know which one I prefer.

Since they have the whole other category, I see no real reason to discriminate.

I’ve learned so much from this channel, and I’ve come to trust you as a reputable source of information. I’ve also appreciated your anti-AI intro segment. However, I’m disappointed in the use of AI-generated images throughout this video… please consider removing these images and avoid using them in the future. I promise, your channel is strong enough without them, and their inclusion only hurts your credibility.
