In 1961, shortly after the end of the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro, the Bay of Pigs Invasion took place, carried out by Cuban exiles who formed Brigade 2506. The invasion was planned by the Eisenhower administration and implemented shortly after the Kennedy administration took office.
The operation was designed by Richard Bissell with the aim of overthrowing Castro. Despite his initial support, Kennedy withdrew air support, significantly weakening the operation. Cuban government forces, with the help of the local population, managed to repel Brigade 2506 in a fierce battle at Playa Girón and Playa Larga.
The victory at the Bay of Pigs consolidated Fidel Castro's power and strengthened his communist regime. This defeat was a turning point in relations between the United States and Cuba, and had significant political and diplomatic repercussions during the Cold War. The Bay of Pigs invasion marked a key episode in the history of Cuba and international relations in the 20th century.
