In 1959, an 18-year-old kid got off a boat in Seattle with $100, a police blacklist behind him in Hong Kong, and no idea he'd become the most famous martial artist who ever lived.

Every Bruce Lee documentary rushes past Seattle. You get 90 seconds — he moved to America, he washed dishes, then he's in Oakland fighting Wong Jack Man. But the Bruce Lee who walked into a YMCA handball court in October 1960 was not the same person who arrived 14 months earlier. This is what happened in between.

Jesse Glover, the black judo champion who got rejected by every Japanese dojo in Seattle. Taki Kimura, an internment camp survivor who hadn't held his head up in 18 years. Yoichi Nakachi, a Shorin-ryu black belt who trained in secret in the mountains under American occupation — and who lasted 11 seconds.

This is the story of how Seattle built the man who would go on to build Jeet Kune Do.

Sources for this episode include Jesse Glover's own written account of the Seattle years, Bruce Lee's letters to Taki Kimura, and firsthand recollections from Ed Hart and Leroy Garcia.

Keep training, remember to breathe, and come back and holler at me on the next video.
