Our best find ever!
Today we visit the town of Monifieth, in Angus. Its our fifth visit to the banks of the River Tay. Monifieth is an important location regards the Picts - there is evidence of long term settlement in the area and several stones, found during renovations of the local Parish Church have revealed that the site was once host to a Culdee - a religious order with a Christian cast, but with a strong Celtic influence in practice and beliefs. The 'Monifieth Stones' were discovered in the mid 1800s; they are carved on both faces - heavily Celtic on one side and heavily Christian on the other. At least one of the stones was used in an ancient religious building on the site of the modern church, and all, bar one, were recycled and incorporated into the newer building.
When we arrive at the beach we discover a sea shell enthusiasts dream!! This is a great beach for shells, at least it is today! The beach here is very wide at low tide, but beware, the tides flow in irregularly, and can circle around the unwary. The beach is a wonderful golden sand, with wide open space and amazing views out towards the North Sea. We find more plastic and refuse than usual on this beach - perhaps because it is so close towards the mouth of the River Tay.
One of our first, and most important discoveries on this beach is that it is continuous with a military firing range - Barry Buddon Training Camp. We are very grateful to the officer on watch for keeping us out of the way of danger! If you visit this beach, watch out for red flags and do not pass them if they are flying. Its best to check online to see when the range is in use before deciding to make a trip here.
Its perhaps no surprise that we find an excess of shotgun cartridges on this beach, though we suspect they do not come from the firing range - they most likely come from surrounding farms and have found their way to the beach here after floating around for some time and distance.
We could not be happier with our finds today! We find our best find ever in the shape of a whole, undamaged blue glass bottle, that we suspect was once filled with milk of magnesia! Its a glorious sight to see the blue glass glimmer in the sands - and what a lucky find - just check the video out to see how we very nearly walked straight past it!
Among our other finds are two vulcanite stoppers - check out our St Andrews video to find out more about these items! Both are in great shape and their details can easily be read -one belongs to an old Dundee brewery that has recently been given a new lease of life for the folks of Dundee!
Thank you for watching, we hope you enjoyed the video.

Social Distancing: Although we would love to take you further afield, we will have to wait until we are allowed to do so. At present, we are following guidance to only travel short distances, remain local, and adhere to social distancing recommendations. We are very fortunate to live in the Kingdom of Fife where places like Kirkcaldy, with its vast beach front, are on our doorstep and are seldom visited by any more than a handful of people at any time.
