giving Bread creative freedom was a mistake ;-) if anyone has corrections or better explanations on my video, feel free to share so we can all learn more!

My dad is a mechanic and about to retire.  His whole job is troubleshooting.  He can solve a problem over the phone by a description of a noise.  His advice is always “Don’t be a Part-Swapper.  You must learn to diagnose.” And also “Try the easiest, quickest, simplest thing first.”

10:56 "there is nothing more permanent than a temporary solution that works"

I like the editing on this one, we're fancy now!

journalctl -k and dmesg | grep error is what I use to look for errors.

I'm a regular FLOSS contributor and my dayjob is tech hotline for an ISP. I cannot stress enough the importantance of precise error messages. I stopped counting the number of times customers call us and say "my wifi isn't working" when it's actually the connection to the outside world which isn't working while the wifi connection itself is perfectly fine.

Have a notebook just for Linux. Take copious notes on both problem and solutions - even if you think they're obvious. When you write out a command you used put in all the parameters. Follow with an explanation for why you choose those parameters. You'd be amazed how useful this will be in the future. In essence you create your own Linux handbook specific to the things you do. It is invaluable.

you're troubleshooting troubleshooting 😎

One thing I'd like to add about "reading the forums, etc..." is: "Don't get lost".
I quite often see people that click on every single link present in the discussion opening tons of tabs in their browser.

You probably have time so read carefully first :)

Happy Halloween! Currently trying to move to Linux as a first time noob. Gonna finish this video later but I hope everyone has a great night!

My father was an engineer and so he would spend time with me at a very young age six / seven and walk me through troubleshooting which is what he spent a lot of time on at work. That has been so useful for me in work and with computers as I generally am the only one with a Linux box trying to solve the problem amongst my friends and family.

great video! Troubleshooting is a skill that can take you far in just about any endeavor. It can be performed at any level, and as you do it you'll gain deeper knowledge of that area. My tip? Take a moment to write down what you learned afterwards.

Your videos on linux are greatest thing since sliced bread, Bread. Thanks.

I feel like 'check whether glibc got updated' is always step zero.

often times it is helpful enough to do one of those two things (where it'd apply)

1- running the desired app with default configuration
2- running the desired app through the terminal so you can see what happens in real time while it crashes

These are some commands that have helped me in troubleshooting and also just seeing the underlying processes for a better conceptual understanding of what's going on. But like what was said in the video; troubleshooting is about narrowing the scope of your investigation so using the options to narrow the output is highly recommended:

[ lsof ] --shows all open files and the processes using those files
-i    shows all files accessed by network connections
-c [ string ] lists all files accessed by a particular process
-t [ file ] list the IDs of processes that have accessed a particular file
-d mem shows all memory-mapped files

[ journalctl -f ] --runs journalctl in follow mode which keeps actively writing the last 10 entries]
this can be a great little debug window, especially if the error is intermittent.

And Bread, don't sell yourself short; knowing more than someone is really a relative thing when it comes to OSs.

Critical thinking is becoming a lost art. Thank you for pointing out the steps involved for that exact endeavor. So few people actually take the time to try to examine why something fails and try to learn why and how to correct it (and hopefully post a potential fix!). I appreciate what you're pointing out and resolution possibilities. Rare helpfulness. Thank you.

your videos are so cute, entertaining and informational at the same time, i really like them, keep going because you are doing a great job :)

Thanks for the video Bread.
