Could a motorcycle in the communist era cost so much that it was practically out of reach for the average Pole? It could. Although today the WSK, SHL, Jawa, and Junak are primarily associated with simple, mass-produced motoring, some models were truly luxurious in their day. Their price could equal many monthly salaries, and purchasing them required not only money but often also patience, connections, and luck.

In this episode, you'll learn about five motorcycles from the communist era that were among the most expensive and desirable machines available to Polish riders. We'll begin with the WSK M21W2, then move on to the SHL M17 Gazelle, the East German MZ ES 250/1, and the Czechoslovak Jawa 350, before concluding with the Junak M10—a motorcycle that in Poland became a symbol of prestige, power, and dreams of something much greater than a mere means of transportation.

The WSK M21W2 demonstrated how far a popular and relatively simple design could be developed. A more powerful engine and better equipment meant it was no longer just a cheap commuter. For many young riders, it represented the first step into the world of more serious motorcycles.

The SHL M17 Gazelle was a much more ambitious project. Its modern silhouette, 175cc engine, and features designed to compete with motorcycles from other Eastern Bloc countries made the Gazelle look like a machine from a completely different era. The problem was that this modernity came at a steep price.

The MZ ES 250/1 came from the GDR and represented a higher class than most popular Polish motorcycles. Its larger displacement, distinctive silhouette, and good brand reputation made owning an MZ a source of pride for many riders. It was a machine that got noticed on the street.

The Jawa 350 was among the even more desirable motorcycles. A twin-cylinder engine, greater power, and a distinctive sound made the Czechoslovak design clearly distinguish itself from the lightweight WSK and WFM models. At a time when cars were still considered a luxury, the large Jawa could serve as a true family and touring vehicle.

Finally, there's the Junak M10. Heavy, four-stroke, and significantly more prestigious than most domestic motorcycles. It wasn't cheap, wasn't particularly easy to maintain, and required more attention than its simple two-stroke competitors, but that's precisely why it became a legend. For many Poles, it was the equivalent of a large Western motorcycle, one to be envied.

In this article, we'll examine how much these motorcycles cost in their day, how their prices compared to average wages, why some models were so difficult to obtain, and what exactly the customer got for what was, for the communist era, a hefty sum. We'll also examine which designs truly deserved their price, and which ones sold more on the dream of prestige than on real technical superiority.

Which of these motorcycles would you choose: WSK, Gazela, MZ, Jawa, or Junak?
