drum machine in full effect. jam and terry lewis in full effect on production. they wrote this track too.. great song from my DECADE.

Welcome to the soon to be 2026. This song is loaded with multi-faceted subtext. There's a lotta depth that, for various reasons, many seem to miss. The main one that I've come across over the yrs are those who really enjoy listening because it "sounds cool." But yet get hung-up on the idea that "it's just a lame ass excuse for cheating." I think that I can dispel that notion. But, 1st things 1st. We're all entitled to our own high ideas, views, and moral standards. And regardless of how different yours are from mine, I'm truly grateful to God that you have them. Please understand, as I do, that these are gifts that must be handled with great care. Far too often, they stray from being our guide to being a weapon that can cause unnecessary damage and hurt to those around us who are already damaged and hurting. From the outside in, when faced with the problems and issues of others, high ideas, views, and moral standards are to be displayed. Never spoken. And compassion is always the order of the day. With that in mind. Here's my take...When it comes to interpersonal relationships, mistakes will be made. Unintended things happen. And despite the insistent protestations of the hard-liners, that includes infidelity. Be it emotional, and/or physical, cheating is usually seen as 1 thing and 1 thing only. "A heartless unforgivable intentional act of betrayal." For the most part, that's exactly what it is. But not always. This strict definition is based on the notion that, outside of forced violation, any act of intimacy must be a conscious agreement between the participants. This completely ignores and dismisses any circumstantial and situational evidence. As well as the condition and state of mind of the offender. Within the subtext of the lyrics there's a facet that touches upon the psychology of those who struggle with loneliness due to separation anxiety. Which can easily cause an onset of mental and emotional turmoil. So, while the answer of "I didn't mean for it to happen. It just happened." is usually a load of nonsensical BS, sometimes it's a legit claim that should be considered. Not ignored. One could easily say that our couple were both emotionally compromised at the time of their indiscretion. One can't just ignore the fact that we aren't always in control of our faculties. In short. Infidelity can indeed happen unintentionally. It isn't about lame excuses. It's about human frailties, and our ability to forgive when we succumb to them. When it comes to forgiveness and letting go, there's a delicate balance that must be struck. One has to weigh the value of letting go and moving forward together-against-the value of letting go and moving on in separate ways. If it means enough to you, then taking the risk of getting hurt again is what you do. I'm a firm believer in 2nd chances. I also recognize that when it comes to intimacy, which requires trust, there are no chances beyond that. And nor should there be. Sometimes it turns out to be worth the risk. Sometimes it doesn't. In either direction, letting go is a difficult thing to face...Godspeed and Happy Holidays Everyone🎉

It's an apology for cheating. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from the group The Time, produced this song. Classic 80s jam. I've always loved it.

WOW the 80’s were something! Wish I could go back! Only with the knowledge I have now tho! That music takes me right back there!✌🏻😎

A beautiful and well-produced song has three key points: confession, repentance, and plea for forgiveness. Perfect 👍

I think this was their only single to chart higher in the US than the UK

I miss the 80s😢😮

What a perceptive review.

Forgot wat a fantastic v song this definitely a sting in the tail, so different from their early stuff, empire state human etc, Sheffeild certainly produced some great bands back in the 80s

Number one in the US and also the band's final hurrah. Released in 1986, this hit the top spot in the US five years after their last US number one in 1981.

Have you already heard their "Don't you want me" 🤔? 🎶

One of the few songs you like better if you can't understand the lyrics...
