Mastodon Take Us Inside Marrow Deep: Josh Homme, Geezer Butler, and Facing Loss Head-On

Mastodon co-founders Troy Sanders and Brann Dailor sit down with Consequence for a raw, wide-ranging Cover Story conversation about loss, brotherhood, and their new album, Marrow Deep.
The band has been through an extraordinary amount in the past two years: Sanders lost his home to Hurricane Helene, Dailor lost his mother, and the band parted ways with founding guitarist Brent Hinds — who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in August 2025. In this interview, Sanders and Dailor open up about processing that grief, the year since Hinds' passing, and how those experiences shaped Marrow Deep, an album inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology.
They also dig into the album's star-studded guest list — including Josh Homme, Geezer Butler, Randy Blythe, and Joe Duplantier — the band's evolving lineup with new members João Nogueira and Nick Johnston, and their headlining "The Poisonous Weapons Tour" with Deafheaven and Alcest.
