This is a fun improv-style Christmas Tree Quilt Block Tutorial.

I've made two versions of this block but the overall block construction is the same. You either start with a one-color crumb block in tones of green (see video link below) or start with your leftover green and red or Christmas Fabric scrappy strips and we'll make a version with a cute garland on the tree.

As with most of my quilt block tutorials, there is little if any measuring. We use a triangle shape as a guide throughout the piecing and then trim up the final quilt block at the end. There is no pre-cutting of pieces ahead of time.

If you don't have an accuquilt don't worry, just use any other triangle ruler or template or cut a triangle out free-form. There are no rules!

Would you make the strips version or the crumb block version? What would you do with these blocks - make a quilt? a cushion? something else?

I love how you work. It’s the same way I do. When you said you are a bit “uncomfortable” using bigger pieces of fabric I nearly jumped out of my chair and yelled “FINALLY I FOUND SOMEONE WHO GETS IT 🎉”. I say this ALL of the time to my multiple quilt group friends who work completely from very specific pattern directions. I am fortunate, they all give me their scraps so it’s a holiday EVERY day. I buy tons of yardage and encourage them to take and use whatever they need. All I ask in return is that they bring me the scraps. To me that is a win win situation. They don’t get it but I am gradually breaking them in 😂.

I understand your thinking, when you started at the top and work down, but the way my head processies, I would have started at the bottom and worked my way up. Big pieces down to the little pieces. I like the way you explain red bits as Garland and your process for doing that. It made total sense to my head. Thank you.

I love the unpolished and naive look to it. It was clearly made with your child and not for him. It's a treasure. You've inspired me to try something like this with my little one.

These would also make great postcards. Quilt a little with some batting or fleece. Zigzag or pink the edges. Back with cardstock. Mail either in an envelope or not. They make a very special Christmas card.

Inspiring as always, Kristen! I really like your free-flow method of piecing. I prefer squaring up units and blocks, since it eliminates the need for accurate seams. Your demo made me flash back to my teaching days—using your fingers/hands as non-standard measuring tools. 😊 I have a village/street Wallhanging project on my TO-DO list, and I’ll definitely use one/both methods to make my tree blocks! FYI, your video notes are the best!

I think the denim would make great pillow covers that are sturdy for being used on the floor. The white background could be a "matching" wall hanging.

Kristen you could add applique around your Christmas tree. with decorative edges to spice it up a little bit and add a different look to your quilt block
