The academy assigns a quiet Deathworld girl to its most intimidating Beast Class, where enormous alien creatures train alongside the galaxy’s strongest cadets. The instructors expect the human to struggle among monsters known for their strength and aggression. Instead, the beasts begin reacting strangely the moment she enters the training area. She remains completely calm while the other students watch their supposed predators become increasingly nervous. Soon, even the toughest creatures are requesting transfers away from her class. The instructors cannot understand why the beasts fear a human who has barely spoken to them. Then the Deathworld girl reveals what she considers normal behavior around dangerous creatures, leaving the entire academy questioning who the real predator is.
