Fall asleep aboard the Santa María in 1492, down on the open deck with the sailors and ship's boys of Palos, not in the Admiral's cabin. About 40 men shared a ship of roughly 100 tons that had exactly 1 bed. A boy turned a half-hour sand glass 48 times a day, and 8 glasses made a watch. For 36 nights out of sight of land, the Admiral kept two logs: on 1 October the secret figure was 707 leagues, and the crew were told 584. Then, at 2 a.m. on 12 October, a cry came across the water from the Pinta.

In this video, we talk about what it was really like to sleep on Columbus's ship, including the men of Palos and the royal order that sent them, the last water at La Gomera, one fire a day on a bed of sand, the binnacle lamp and the Salve sung at dusk, the half-hour glass and the ship's boys' verses, the helmsman steering blind below decks, the Admiral's two reckonings, the clock of the Guards, the wages and the 10,000-maravedí reward, forty sleepers and one bed, the night the crew could endure no longer, the light like a wax candle, the landfall at Guanahaní, the first hammocks, and the nightingale at last off Hispaniola.
