I wish somebody taught me this 17 years ago when I gave up on my career dreams after years of chasing after the wrong kind of perfection as a tormented piano major.

Incredibly honest, humble, and candid advice for pianists. I once played Rach 3 for him in a masterclass. He was such a generous teacher, with extremely helpful suggestions.

one thing to be aware of is people tend to practise the easy parts and also try to run before they can walk.

A marvellous talk! On this subject, I was always very struck by Arrau's saying "When I practice, it's almost without emotion. It's like being in a workshop."

This was an important interview. A chance to hear how an artist works through the challenges of living as a professional pianist. It is a wonderful opportunity for young pianists who are serious about the instrument to hear the joys and rigors.

Of course this is interesting, like any fly on wall documentary. But it is surprisingly reticent on almost all practical aspects. By implication we learn the importance of memory (because he says practising without the score is necessary to security on the concert platform). But how to memorise?

wow! what a revelation to hear a genius like this mentioning 'Crossroads', I play the solo part on my channel ha ha. It's like hearing Rachmaninoff saying: 'Yeah, I used to enjoy hearing that guitar solo'. :) he's a really amazing artist....top notch concert pianist and master composer; it's brilliant to be either, but both at the same time? That's extremely, extremely rare. Super musician level stuff.

It's interesting he says not to trust the 'motor-memory'. The imagery you have attached to this is great.

This is all a bit high-brow for the 'average' pianist (only five or six tricky moments in Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini!!??), but there''s a key point near the start: Don't practise as if it's a performance. Don't we tend to do this? I do! Separate the technical aspects of the piece from the music so that you don't get bored with it, retain that freshness Hough refers to. I'm only (in my late 50s) starting to do this; we'll see if it works!
