Long before the modern era, ordinary citizens felt relatively safe from the horrors of the battlefield, secure in the knowledge that conflicts were fought miles away by trained soldiers. That fundamental reality of ordinary life was permanently shattered by the invention of the bomber. This documentary investigates the terrifying evolution of aerial warfare, tracing its origins from paper hot air balloons to the devastating multi-engine aircraft of the Second World War. You will learn how military leaders shifted their tactics from targeting frontline combatants to intentionally bombing civilians in their homes to break a nation's morale. From the shocking destruction of Guernica and the frantic evacuation of Dunkirk to the relentless firestorms of the London Blitz and the surprise strike on Pearl Harbor, witness the complete history of the most lethal airborne inventions ever created. Explore the brutal technological arms race of the twentieth century and see how everyday people found ways to endure the unimaginable terror falling from the sky.
