Baby monkey Punch never had a mom to run back to - but on July 29 at Ichikawa Zoo, one newborn had way too many "moms."

On Monkey Mountain at Ichikawa City Zoo, everyone wants a turn with the babies. Scientists call it allomothering: young females and "aunties" who hold and carry infants that aren't theirs. Even one-year-old Punch got pulled into it on July 18. Then on July 29, a young monkey held on to a newborn, hands reached in from every side... and it tried to run away with the baby.

The science in this video:
Baby Japanese macaques cling to mom's belly for their first weeks - for milk, warmth and safety.
Other females, especially young ones, are drawn to newborns and try to hold them. Scientists think it helps them practice for motherhood. Moms usually get their babies back.
In 2008, a newborn at this same zoo was found with a female who wasn't her mom and couldn't feed her. Keepers raised her by hand. Her name is Otome - and today she's a mom herself.

We love this little guy and deeply respect the keepers at Ichikawa City Zoo, a small local zoo doing its best for him every day.
