Scriabin's advice to Horowitz to learn other aspects of music and art reminds me of Scriabin's own teacher who encouraged his students to explore music and art outside of the piano.
This reminds me of that documental on Argerich, in which it's said she choose an apartment close to that of Horowitz so that perhaps a casual encounter would occur. Unfortunately, an encounter never occurred.
I discovered Scriabine when I was in high school. I saw a sign on a building near my school which said "In this house lived Alexander Scriabine". It was in Lausanne, Switzerland. I then read about his life, he tried to walk on lake Geneva as if he was Jesus… He was a genius and a crazy man!
Horowitz playing that Scriabin study is just ultimate and heart-wrenching. Arguably the greates pianist who ever lived. How lucky we are that he lived so far into the recording age and left us such treasures and reminiscences.
I soooo appreciate hearing Horowitz talk about this. I love Skrjabin's and Rachmaninoff's music so much that they seem almost unreal. But this makes them more real
In a century not short of great pianists, Horowitz stands tall as one of the most accomplished, together with a very small group of geniuses. That complex musicality!
How great VH returned to visit homeland. Folks worldwide loved the Artistry of VH. And VH really understood Russian Music. Lucky audiences for generations, for both live concerts & historic recordings.
Horowitz talks about when he met Scriabin and his first attempt to meet Rachmaninoff
