Traveling to a totalitarian, authoritarian, or simply unfree country is easy these days. It's interesting what you can see, and most importantly, notice and discern, on such a journey. Mostly, such trips bring back touristic impressions—restaurants, coffee shops, exhibitions, and theaters.
But the big picture is visible from a distance.
So I decided to travel to Nazi Berlin in 1936 and try to understand what impressions and observations I could take away from this wonderful, radiant, and very unusual city.
