The myth that Ducatis, particularly the Tamburini ones are unreliable is another one of those hoary bench tales. I had a 748 that had been neglected by previous owners. I gradually refreshed it and it proved reliable. The only surprises where things that had been let go and worn out, like the chain slider on the swing arm, etc. The farings are quick to remove because the bike is essentially an homologation model, i.e., a race bike with blinkers.

Please keep us in the loop, it would be nice to know what has happened to the motor and the fix!

Chill stroll through things.  Thank you for bringing us along.  🤗

What a beauty of a motorcycle

Two things I find amazing: first that someone would park a bike that had mechanical issues for 8 years without doing anything. Second, that anyone would let the oil get to that state without changing it.

Nice bike and video. Sensible man knows when to pick his battles and when to pass.

These workshop videos are rather excellent, Dave. That engine sounds like someone left a spanner in there 😢

This is awesome to see. I’m in the process of building a 748 right now and I just finished a 996. I love these bikes. That clunk could have come from a destroyed clutch as well, should have opened that up just to peak at it.

And while I think about it! While the alternator rotor was turning, it could still be that the retaining nut was loose. The rotor is keyed to the crank and it can fall off because the cover holds it on.
Rocker arms are easy to check just by sliding the cams out. You can get your finger in then and feel the rockers for wear/ flaking.
Surprisingly, the engines are easy to work on. The only tricky bit it getting the preload on the main bearings right.

It may not work, but it’s still so beautiful, I’d have it in my garage rather than a bike that actually works 🤔😆🥰

As always an educational video , with the right amount of tounge in cheek laughter , except for the owner , let us know what happens , and keep the videos coming

The big issue with them is poor quality hardening on the camshaft lobes, particularly on high lift versions. Very common for it to peel off in less than 10k km. If you are buying one look very carefully and expect trouble. Use only the right Shell Ultra oil, change it like underpants and minimise cold starts. Disconnect the motor kill switch on the sidestand if it has one, they fail early and you will spend a lot of time finding out why the  bike doesn't start.

My 996 was very reliable. Didn’t always start, but that was battery issues that were common, so no idea why that was. Other than that, was amazing

conrod bearings, when you see the color and the amount of old oil... not really a surprise wth

My first super bike, the 748.  The sound and feeling when shutting the throttle from high speed from the air filter box was intoxicating. RSV MILLE after that but not the same.

Really enjoyed this. Love these videos you make on bike diagnostics

From the opening minute I’d be checking for spark first

Great content as usual Dave! Between you and Jim over at Superbike Surgery, we get the best of bike repair knowledge on the interwebs. Hoodie and hat on the way - whoop!!

Thank you for your uploads. Being a Ducati owner your videos are very informative and helpful. Keep up the great work!

Really love the workshop videos, Dave.
