Personally I've always found the mental aspect hardest. I'm constantly self-criticising and asking myself "who would listen to this?". Even though I know it's not the right mentality, it's difficult to let go of it. Nice to see a video exploring the mental side of music production.

I’ve been making music for 20 years and this phenomenon is still the biggest obstacle to my creativity, even after so long.

I made the massive mistake of not testing my track in Mono before playing it out once. The result was phase cancellation in the club and I lost the vocal. I now mix by switching from mono to stereo all the time. Testing on different speakers is essential so thanks for the reminder sweaty Oscar.

Usually I hate something while I'm working on it, especially if I'm working on it too much. If I put the project away for a while and come back to it, I'm like "Hey, this isn't bad." 🤣

Yeah I actually realised that I have to take more breaks and also longer breaks, it helps to work on 2 or more different tracks at the same time. But I also remember, before I realised this I thought I was actually crazy. Like how the f*ck did that sound so good last night!?!? And then in the morning sounds so stupid and it doesn’t translate at all… That was the main reason that made me quit a few times for like 5-6 days, and I would be depressed until I hear some good techno and then I would say to myself okay let’s go back again… 😂😂 ohh God, great memories…

Tonal Balance Control is a luxury,  for free you can get TDR Prism, slap it on your main, then route your reference track to the sidechain and have superimposed spectrograms

So true but works both ways imo. I can listen to music I made from a few months ago and hardly remember doing it myself but also think surely that’s not mine it’s too good 😂

My audio interface once broke so I couldn't mix on studio monitors. Low on budget I was forced to get cheap $15 gaming headphones while waiting for a fix of my interface. It forced me to make songs and finish them as quickly as possible without looking at the details so much. Frequency range was limited and stereo field didn't exist at all, main focus was on the human voice and that was a big plus because I could focus on the hearable range of most of the budget sound system. Later on, I've been checking the mix on main monitors just to hear all the stuff clearly and compare. Why this is important? Most of people use lower quality headphones, speakers with limited freq range or response comparing to studio monitors. Some say the magic is in the mid range not sub but it hit good in the club. Although as always it is good to check how mix sounds on as many speakers, headphones as possible.

Hmm... nice!

I swear, professionally mixed tracks almost have a way of having lots of upper mid range that seems invisible... or not harsh, but just there adding balance to the adequate low end. If you at home EQ to what you think it should should like your mix is too bass heavy and muddy... if you attempt to add in the same values of upper mid you get nasty harsh air that isn't the same as pro tracks. I figured this out recently though, once you get close enough, looking at stuff like RMS or LUFS or the tonal balance control won't provide you with enough information anymore, and it's up to only your ears. Two mixes of the same song can be -10 LUFS and one will sound louder, two mixes of the same song can look almost identical on tonal balance control and one is bright and one is muddy. I use metric A/B like there's no tomorrow even just with older mixes of the same track I'm working on, and it's been a major game changer.

Yes i would give up my car if we someday have actual working public transport, and not replacement bus for sections of train at random time.
