I've had a woodburner for 15 years+ and I've never paid for any wood. It was tricky initially when we got the woodburner to get enough free wood but I'm now in the situation where my neighbours bring me any wood that they need top dispose of. I recently came back from a weeks holiday in Devon and when we got back home I had a pile of 10 pallets that someone had dropped on my drive for me.

One trick that I use to dry out my wood is to use my greenhouse after the tomato growing season is over. With the sun in September still being quite strong its amazing how fast the sun, through the glass, dries wood out. My woodburner is a 12.5kw beast and powers the central heating and heats our water. I think I currently have around 2 years supply of wood cut and stacked in my garden.

Where I live in France the local fire defence department cut down trees every year to keep the fire breaks open and trees away from roads. They take away the majority but some is always forgotten and I usually see it while I’m out cycling.
Me and the missus pop back with the trailer and it’s very satisfying to come back each time with 500+ kilos with oak and pine and some big trunks.
In 6 yrs I’ve not had to buy any and I use a lot each winter.
It’s hard work collecting, cutting, splitting stacking then moving to the wood store but it’s a lifestyle choice which we both enjoy.

Had a woodburner for 25 plus years, and have never bought any . All foraged within a few miles of our property. Our Stihl battery chainsaw always comes with us when out and about.
Surprising how much wood gets thrown in skips too.

i burn mine from around 8 in the morning to 10 ish in the winter every day, i go through about 6 (actual) cube of beech logs , (not cube bags)  i cut my own wood on farms and pay the farmers around £80 for 1.5 cube which my trailer holds, so i cut , i split, i season and it costs me 320 quid for a winter season, i dont think i'd have the time to find suitable wood in bulk , like massive beech trees , in order to be able to do it totally free, the convenience of a few trees on a fam close to each other makes 80 quid a load a bargain for me, if i burned it for aesthetics occassionally then yes it get it entirely free !    to do what i have done though you need a 4x4 vehicle, an 8x4x4 trailer, 15 ton log splitter, couple chainsaws and all the other bits and pieces. Now all that cost serious money (i had the 4x4) but over just 4 years the money i saved on gas has paid for it all and then some :)

The thinner wood you can use in a rocket burner for cooking....

Any free wood is good wood. And if you don't mind the hassle of working with smaller stuff you can get some nice amount of heat from it.
But an additional question. Is free really free? It does take in a fair amount of investment. Logshed, chainsaws (and petrol, oil, electricity), sawbuck, splitter or axe and some bibs and bobs.
Now don't get me wrong. It does safe you allot of money. But it takes time and investment to get it back.
That said. Limbwood is often overlooked as everyone wants treetrunks. But good beefy limbs are great firewood. For me anything below 4.5cm diameter gets mulched or burned in the firepit. And any log 8/10cm diameter gets split at least once.

I scrounge a bit of free firewood here and there. I quite often get Laurel. It grows quite quick then home owners get pissed off and remove them.
Brilliant firewood.

What I have noticed is split your rounds at least once if they are that small. The bigger the diameter gets the more it needs to be split (bigger in quaters an even in eigths if needed)
The smaller branches get spilt once and I use them for kindling.

almost that time of year again mate! will be my second winter with the clock! i said to my girlfriend im not wishing the nice weather away but a part of me is looking forward to getting the log burner on and to use the free wood ive gathered over the past year. hopefully will not have to buy any logs this year and because our clocks are pretty big ive got some nice big logs ready to burn. bigger than the ones you get from a merchant i think! i chopped my apple tree down last year as i couldnt be arsed with all the fermented apples everywhere lol anyway hope your well mate looking forward to watching your vids this winter with a cup of tea :)

Hi Ryan always good content just a thought tho keep the logs 6inch away from the brick wall that will allow air flow all the way round your logs I find logs stacked against a wall will draw moisture from the bricks when they get wet I use a Scandinavian wood racks for drying it allows air flow all the way around great content in your vids love watching your experiments with different woods and materials

Hi Ryan, I have the same saw horse as you. Do yourself a favour and screw a sacrificial piece of old timber on the top rail, as the inevitable happens when cutting larger rounds the chainsaw suddenly cuts through and you hit the top of the horse, plenty of sparks and gouges . We do not rely totally on wood but in 22 years the total cost of wood has been a case of red wine.

Hey Ryan, some of those earlier pieces you cut would benefit from a split, they'll dry quicker if you do. i know there borderline as they're not too big but you might as well.
Having collected enough free firewood for each of the 3 previous years i can testify to the wonders of it, it has saved us a fortune in utility bills.
ps if you fancy buying a splitter i would heartily recommend a fiskars x36, its brilliant.

My free firewood gathering is ongoing year round. Currently I am collecting a mix of Lawson Cypress, Red Cedar, Poplar, Sitka, Douglas Fir, (been standing dead for 2 to 3 years) all around 60 to 80 feet tall with trunks varying from 18 inch to 3 feet along with various smaller Ash and Willow trees.

A lot is logged up but not yet split, some is being stored stacked as short length on pallets until it is needed and I need to figure out where i am going to store the rest as there is a lot more to come from this site not sure if I have enough space it is going to have to be stacked very tidy.

It is not an ideal mix of wood and splitting will not be fun despite having most of the range of Fiskars axes and mauls I know I will end up wishing i had an electric vertical splitter but can't be fussy when it is free.

Should keep me occupied for a while.
