As far as Lieutenant goes there’s the right way to say it and the American way

I just got inspired to rewatch the Hornblower series for the 10th time

So to prepare to battle you literally had hundreds of men doing very detailed things running everywhere, it was controlled chaos.

There's just something about ships from the age of sail. They're way more impressive to look at than the giant hulks of steel we have today

Victory was launched today (11th of may), 1765. Thats 261 years ago.

Man the british navy really was the entire reason for it becoming such a superpower during the Victorian era. What are your competitors going to do if you can just literally strangle 90% of their trade at your whim?

@WalterWild-uu1td 4 days ago

If the wind was too light they could put out ships boats, attach ropes and tow the ship... guys with oars on the smaller boats. Another reason they had so many men. It was slow but if they were dead in the water, it was the only way to keep moving.

You can go to England and see it in person (be careful not to hit your head). It's in the historic dockyard in Portsmouth, where they also have the HMS Warrior which was the first metal warship.

Because they slaughtered the soldiers in the movie like in real life with superior gunnery by the time they boarded the enemy ship their numbers were greatly reduced or even at least.

0:55 There are 3 royal navy ensons
1 is white, 1 is red and 1 blue.

Leftennant vs Lieutenant
Lieutenant, from the French in lieu of and tenant, meaning holder.
Lefttennant is a more correct way to say it in English, one who is left with the tenancy of the platoon/company ship/division.

Or more literally a second in command or one who inherits the position when the main stakeholder isn't there.

Barotrauma but in the HMS Victory?

A game like uboat but for this would be great but the micro needed would be insane

The rate system at the time

1st rate 100+ guns
2nd rate 80-98 guns
3rd rate 64-80 guns
4th rate 50-60 guns
5th rate 32-44 guns
6th rate 20-24 guns
UNRATED less than 20 guns

Only 1st, 2nd and 3rd are ships of the line.
4th rate was once considered ship of the line but by the time it was no longer one

For reference hms victory is a 1st rate and uss constitution is a 5th rate

2:13 actually the British navy is more than that, the total number of commissioned and active warships in the royal navy is 60 which includes
2 aircraft carriers,
6 destroyers,
5 frigates,
10 submarines,
7 mine countermeasures vessels,
26 patrol vessels,
and one historic ship (17th century Ship of the line HMS Victory).
That might not seem much but it is sufficient for Britain's specific navel doctrine

Command of the Sea around the British Isle: Controlling vital sea lanes to secure national trade and stop enemy movements.

The Two-Power Standard: Historically adopted in 1889 requiring the fleet to equal the combined strength of the next two largest European navies (currently France and Italy☆).

Offensive Strategy: Seeking out and neutralizing enemy fleets near their source rather than waiting for coastal defense
☆not strictly necessary nowadays when Britain hasn't been at war with Italy for 81 years and France for 211 years

my granddad introduced the series of 'sharp' by Bernard Cornwell. The books are amazing, for a fact i know there is a tv-series. Not sure how the quality is, but if its half as good as the books, totally worth it! lmk if you check it out xoxo
