Tour M – Underground to Freedom
Tunnel Escapes Under the Berlin Wall

Since the SED regime erected the Berlin Wall in August 1961, there have been repeated attempts to escape to freedom by digging tunnels under the deadly barrier. The first tunnel project was launched in October 1961, the last failed in 1982. In total, more than 70 escape tunnel projects were actually started, but only 19 were successful. These tunnels allowed over 300 East German citizens to escape from East to West Berlin. There were spectacular successes, betrayals, and bitter failures. Soon, a veritable cat-and-mouse game developed between tunnel builders and the East German State Security (Stasi), under increasingly difficult conditions for those helping escape and those wishing to flee.

On this two-hour tour, we will visit a central location of these events: Bernauer Straße, a focal point of the Berlin Wall's construction and a hub for escape tunnel building. Within a stretch of just 350 meters, the border fortifications were tunneled under seven times here. The particularly low groundwater level in this area allowed for the construction of escape tunnels at considerable depths.

After an introduction to the topic, we will first visit authentic above-ground sites of spectacular escape tunnel projects. Then we will go underground: In the historic vaults of the former Oswald Berliner Brewery, we will use full-scale tunnel replicas to tell the stories of both betrayed and failed tunnel projects, as well as the two most successful projects from the time of the Berlin Wall: "Tunnel 29" and "Tunnel 57."

A new highlight since November 2019 – eight meters below the surface – is an original escape tunnel from 1970/71. It is accessed via a visitor tunnel approximately 30 meters long, which was constructed independently by the Berlin Underworlds Association (Berliner Unterwelten e.V.) over a period of one and a half years. It is the only genuine escape tunnel still open to the public today.

The guided tour has been awarded the Berlin Wall Quality Seal.

Following the tour, we recommend a visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial.
