I went to the Composite FX fly-in to check out one of the most interesting helicopters in the experimental aviation world: the Mosquito.

These tiny single-seat helicopters have developed a reputation for being some of the most affordable real helicopters you can actually own and fly. In this video, I walk around the different Composite FX / Mosquito models, talk through what makes them so unique, and get a closer look at why these machines have such a loyal following.

We’ll look at the original Mosquito concept, the XE/XEL, the larger-engine 290 variant, and the turbine-powered XET. I also talk about what makes the ultralight version different, why the floats exist, and why these helicopters continue to get so much attention from builders, pilots, and aviation nerds like me.

I’m currently building my own Composite FX XE 290 kit helicopter in my basement, so this fly-in was a great chance to see finished aircraft, talk with other builders, and get even more excited about the project.
