We set out on the backroads of Vancouver Island searching for a remote coastal recreation site hidden at the end of an old road. This Vancouver Island camping adventure would take us through dense forest, logging roads and an increasingly overgrown trail before revealing what was waiting at the end.

There is something different about remote camping on Vancouver Island. You can find a place on a map, study the roads and imagine what might be there — but you never really know what you're going to find until you make the journey yourself.

As we traveled deeper into the Vancouver Island backcountry, we stumbled across mysterious concrete remains hidden in the forest, followed miles of remote roads and eventually reached a section where the vegetation seemed to be taking the trail back.

Would the road still go through? Would the old recreation site still be there? Would someone else already be camping there? And after imagining this place for so long, would it actually live up to what we hoped?

Then the forest opened.

At the end of the road was a remote oceanfront camp surrounded by dense forest and mountains, with calm coastal water, wildlife and passing ships — and we had the entire place to ourselves.

We're intentionally not sharing the exact location. Part of the experience of exploring Vancouver Island's backroads is doing the research, making the journey and treating remote places responsibly when you find them.
