Raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Slawn moved to London in 2018 without a real plan, other than skating and seeing where life would take him. Since then, Olaolu has built a universe around art, fashion, skateboarding and collaborations with some of the world’s most important brands and creatives, from Nike to Formula 1 and the BRIT Awards. Yet, despite all of this, Slawn continues to repeat one thing: “I’m not an artist.”
We met Slawn at his studio in London, surrounded by his paintings, while he worked on a new piece, on the occasion of the cover shoot for Issue Seven of Outpump Magazine. During our conversation, he told us about his story, his relationship with art and success, why he rejects any kind of label, and his ideas on talent, culture and fame.
The new issue of Outpump Magazine is out September 28, for the first time in an international edition, at: https://store.outpump.com
