In this docu-series, 30 men between the ages of 18 and 21 and from differing social backgrounds are thrown together and put through a regime that was once reputed to turn boys into men: national army service. A traditional abuse-screaming sergeant major whips the boys into shape, and those who fail to make the grade are subjected to a range of humiliating punishments, from cleaning the lavatories with a toothbrush to cutting the lawn with nail scissors! As the volunteers contend with homesickness, tension in the barracks, old-school education and the exhausting regime, they reveal their feelings in video diaries.

As Sgt Sullivan sometimes tries not to smile, but only swears if he had to and gives praise when it’s due, as well as Cpl Nouyoukas, it shows there is a light side to them.

When my dad did national service he ate spam cooked in as many disgusting ways as possible for two years just the smell of it made him gag

I am so thankful that I never had to make a bedbox. WRAC in the 70's just made our beds, the army way,with hospital corners. When I left regulars and went into the TA, the sgt asked me to show recruits how to make a bedbox, so I said yes When you show me how. She didn't even realise we didn't do that in basic.

I think all the corporals, sergeants, drill instructors etc on Bad Lads Army are what all young men need around whether in the army or workplace.

I never understood how Pitman's accent changed so much and presumably so quick between his introductory reel and actually appearing in the show. His original Scottish accent is totally gone and he now has a hybrid Mancunian one. Wonder how long he'd been living in Manchester by that point.

Also at 42:41 he mentions the RLC (Royal Logistic Corps). That didn't exist in the 1950s and was formed in 1993. The ACC (Army Catering Corps) was folded into that. Nauyokas himself served in the RLC.

I worked in a Australian Army training Bn in Australia for two years. I was not in the training part of the Bn. I was in a support roll , rarely seeing recruits. What I did see was Instructors carrying on like these loud mouth pricks on this show. It struck me with nothing but disgust for the so called soldiers posing as instructors. Loud mouthed, insecure, power crazed military morons each and every one of them. Anyone who chooses this type of employment in the forces is mentally unfit to serve. They are bullies. All there carryon just raised contempt from the recruits and a lot of the support staff like I was. I was embarrassed to be a soldier among these maniacs.
