Dokdo was once home to tens of thousands of sea lions, but they became completely extinct after the mid-20th century. Now, sea lions can only be found in photographs, taxidermy specimens, and historical records. So why did these tens of thousands of sea lions vanish? The primary reason for their extinction was the indiscriminate overfishing by Japanese fishermen. At the center of this lies Yozaburo Nakai, a fisherman and businessman.
