When you said, “I booked a deluxe cabin”, I said out loud, “Thank you.  For 31 hours, thank you for not booking a capsule down a dark hallway.”  You deserve a nice room!  Please lay your motion sickness medicine beside your travel plans!  I worried for you!  Your American mom haha😂

I used the Shin-Nihonkai Ferry last October from Niigata to Otaru and then Otaru to Niigata. A word of warning to all. The food is adequate, but great it isn't and barely makes the 'good' rank. It is, as can be seen in the video, a bit pricey for what it is. The warning is that whilst in theory paying by credit-card is possible at the restaurant, it invariably is out of order and I suggest to carry plenty of cash. Our return journey from Otaru also saw heavy seas and bad weather. We were delayed in arriving at our port by almost 3 hours. I don't get sea-sick so I was comfortable enough, but there is very, very little to do on the ship (less than even Yukari) and it can be very boring. However, as I have written on many an occasion, if travelling by car and especially if towing a trailer, this ferry service is very good value. Otaru is also a good destination in Hokkaido if intending to travel to the northern regions of Hokkaido. If one wants to enjoy luxury, then the Sunflower ferry on the Pacific side is better, with the Taiheiyo Ferry from Sendai a good second. The food on the Taiheiyo Ferry is better than Shin-Nihonkai Ferry. Shin-Nihonkai Ferry's menu and style is very reminiscent of the Showa and early Heisei eras of Japan. Whenever using public transport on long trips in Japan, it is almost always better to prepare food and drinks in advance than buy on board. This is true of the Shinkansen and ferries especially.

When I was in the Navy, I got to experience rough seas while going through a couple of typhoons and was absolutely thrilled. Seasickness isn't a problem, so that would be a lot of fun for me.

No gift shop to buy medicine? The old ideas I read about didnt work for me when I was on a rough Alaskan cruise years ago. Ate ginger, drank ginger ale, and even when I took the medicine, I tossed it up lol. All that helped was lying down in bed and try to sleep.

Great video!  I like how you include details like which ferries accept credit cards and which don't.  Knowing ahead of time makes preparations easier.
