Great video. Love to watch artists at work. I’ll have to check out their wares but I didn’t see the links. Maybe you could forward them. Cheers my friend

Hey👋 I would pick any day working with you over a 2 weeks cruise ship vacation.😂😂 So much valuable information and camaraderie 😊

Way too many ads. Every 25 seconds? Really??

Wish I could find more original trade stuff. I have a trade knife that I got in a tool box full of tools at a yard sale down here in southern Ontario. It’s a camp type knife that has been crudely rehandled at some point I got it just outside of Walpole island so who knows the real history it has.

You should pin Maria's comments,so we could all find them.

Thanks for an interesting video.
You mentioned that many of these types were ceremonial.  Did many men in the colonial era use these as an everyday tool?

I like your method of teaching by doing. The Hex barrel should end up a fine tomahawk.

Hey Peter and fellow Black Smith. Another very interesting video regarding how the job was done back then. Looks like it is really cold even in the Black Smith workshop. First thing I would do is to close the door/gate, to keep the fires heat inside the workshop 😂😂

👏👍

Love seeing an old school trade that's still done by a few but it's a lost trade these days I am just a beginner myself in fogeing knives it's an interest of mine

more content to learn less history

Fantastic, sirs. "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31) This predates the 1700's since it comes from the King James Version of 1611 and is more useful than worldly philosophy.

Fantastic pieces

How could i get a copy of the dementions of the original hawks you spoke of?

That shop environment has to help improve artistic creativity . What an awesome place to spend winter days.

Hi Peter,

I love to watch true craftsmen making something out of basically nothing and Blacksmithing has to be the ultimate craft in my opinion. However, as much as I can understand the Blacksmiths of old learning through trial and error how to work a chunk of iron to form a useful item I struggle to understand how these people worked out the properties of minerals etc to assist the process. For instance, how did someone work out that Borax could be used as a flux to weld two pieces of metal together (among other properties)? Who first observed this mineral and thought, ‘I know what I can do with this!’ These conundrums fascinate me. We take these processes as part of a normal manufacturing process today but someone once had to work it out and I just can’t comprehend the thought process that they went through. It’s not as if a discovery like that would be through pure chance. I would have thought the chance of some Borax coming into contact with a hot piece of metal being worked in a Blacksmith’s Shop would be next to zero. Fascinating. 🤔

Best wishes,

Mark

Nice job on the smoking tomahawk heads. 👍👏👏👏 I guess it must be easier to say Hex instead of Octagon, when referring to gun barrels. Shooters here in Oz say it as well. 😉

I want a hat like yours

Peter, do you happen to remember the length of gun barrel you started with?

Just some clarification the tool you were given is not a Hammer it's a Flatter which unlike a hammer is a struck tool, not a striking tool.

Great video! I had been wondering about thier construction for a while. Great to see it done with traditional tools and methods.
