Interesting how the same basic principles of this non battle (give time for the civilian leadership to decide and do what is necessary) is also similar to the principles of french COIN you discussed in another video (the military provides support and buys time for the civilian leadership to do what is necessary to win hearts and minds). Although clearly not completely applicable to Ukraine, seems like in more modern conflicts the political strategic maneuver is what is actually key.

The Guy on the Top of the Command Structure (and his Means of Comunication) will also be the Guy on Top of the Target List.

The anti-tank teams left as a kind of "mines" to break up formations without stopping them sounds very much like "fria kriget", (free war), what Swedish units were supposed to do once they ended up behind the enemy frontline. Act on your own initiative, look for soft target, ambush, ambush, ambush.

I think i understood the point: So, under Brossollet's theory in case of another continental conventional war, France would need to gear up aiming for total war (so as to have most of the right tools or shaped in the right direction) but conduct it as a limited goal war so as to de-scalate (if that can be possible) and allow for the public government to negotiate a settlement that prevents nuclear armageddon.

You lose, you lose. You win, slightly, and maybe you manage to keep your capital safe. You win too hard, you lose

Very interesting essay to discuss! And what an interesting career the author had... translating Mao's poetry, of all things!

If you can read french, the military historian Michel Goya tackled it also in his blog la voie de l'épée.  Very interesting piece of mind anyway !

Excellent video. Very interesting. Highly relevant to the situation we find ourselves in Europe today.

Merci - fascinant

Nice

Not to mention that in this scenario you're fighting IN FRANCE where the Soviets would have little incentive not to respond to tactical nuclear weapon strikes with massive tactical strikes of their own, with all strikes from both sides rendering more and more of your own country uninhabitable for years, if not worse.

It's one thing to salt the earth behind you as you retreat, it's another thing entirely to irradiate it.

Another banger regardless, thanks Mr. Shurkin.

at 24 minutes: "what do we need? what's the mission?" : it would seem that since EU armies are not going to "attack" (I mean to have the initiative and go decide to "go mess with someone"), then they will always "react" to some other actor's aggression or interference (or maneuvers or whatever), and therefore... you can't really predict what you need and what the mission will be. Therefore, it's very fitting that your channel is called "Pax Americana", because only the USA has the critical mass to be able to be "ready for anything"

21:55 -- so Brossollet is the guy who invented the doctrine behind the ASMP  -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air-sol_moyenne_port%C3%A9e

Edit: to be more explicit, France has abandoned the "nuclear triad" -- the Navy has the strategic SNLEs (sous marins lanceurs d'engines) and maybe carrier aircraft dropped bombs and the airforce has the explicitly "warning" ASMP but the tactical nukes (Pluton/Hades) are gone and the IRBMS on the plateau d'Albion are no more.
